The U.S. Department of State recently updated its Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution travel advisory for the Republic of Kenya, located in east Africa.

On December 9, 2022, the State Department reconfirmed that visiting some areas in Kenya has increased risk.

Specifically, do not travel to the Kenya-Somalia border counties, some coastal areas, and Turkana County due to civil unrest.

And reconsider visiting the Nairobi neighborhoods of Eastleigh and Kibera.

As well as some regions of Laikipia County, Nyahururu, Laikipia West, and Laikipia North sub-counties. And consider carefully whether to use the Likoni ferry in Mombasa due to safety concerns.

Furthermore, U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling to these areas.

If you do travel to Kenya, the State Department suggests enrolling in the Smart Traveler program to receive security messages and make it easier to locate in an emergency.

For local information, contact the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, which is located at P.O. Box 606 Village Market, 00621 Nairobi, Kenya. The local phone number is 254 20 363-6000.

From a health perspective, the U.S. CDC recently issued travel advisories for measles and yellow fever outbreaks that include Kenya.

The CDC also recommends various travel vaccines before visiting Kenya.

These vaccines are available at certified clinics and pharmacies in the U.S.
