Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is situated on the eastern part of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea, sharing a maritime border with Puerto Rico. As of September 2025, the U.S. CDC and the UK Travel Health Pro publish Travel Health Notices regarding current health issues in the Dominican Republic. No vaccinations are required if arriving from the United States.
The U.S. Department of State issued a Level 2 - Exercise increased caution Travel Advisory for the Dominican Republic, effective June 18, 2025. Visitors should exercise increased caution in the DR due to crime. A visa is required for stays exceeding 30 days. A U.S. passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival in the DR. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive digital alerts.
Chikungunya Dominican Republic
The DR has reported chikungunya cases in the past and shares a land border with Haiti, which has reported cases in 2025.
Dengue Dominican Republic
The Ministry of Health has implemented various actions as part of the National Dengue Plan to reduce the incidence of dengue, including the relaunch of the "eliminate, clean, and cover" campaign. For Epidemiological Week 33, 2025, one confirmed case of dengue was reported, bringing the total for the year to 174. According to data from the Epidemiology Directorate, 1,110 dengue cases were recorded in the same period in 2024, reflecting a reduction of more than 85%.
Malaria Dominican Republic
The Epidemiology Department reports a total of 737 confirmed malaria cases have been reported to the National Epidemiological Surveillance System as of late August 2025. As of May 2025, 70% of the confirmed cases are from San Juan. The UK advises travellers to take antimalarials if appropriate for the area they are visiting. Malaria vaccines are unavailable in the DR; however, antimalarial producers are offered.
Oropouche Dominican Republic
As of September 2025, an outbreak of Oropouche virus disease is ongoing in the DR.
